STDs Q & A

What are common STDs?

STDs are common and preventable diseases that spread through sexual contact. There are dozens of different STDs out there. Some of the most common STDs include:

  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Genital herpes
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Bacterial vaginosis
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Syphilis
  • Hepatitis

If left untreated, STDs can lead to serious health problems, such as infertility and cancer. Dr. Ansari and his team at Primary & Urgent Care offer convenient, on-site STD testing and treatment for these diseases.

Who should get tested for STDs?

If you’re sexually active, it’s a good idea to get tested for STDs. It’s particularly important to get tested if any of the following apply to you.

  • You just started a new sexual relationship
  • You and your partner want to stop using condoms
  • You have multiple sexual partners
  • Your partner has had sex with other people
  • You think you may have an STD

Dr. Ansari tests individuals and couples for STDs so you can be informed about your sexual health.

What STDs should I get tested for?

The only way to know which STDs you should be tested for is to see Dr. Ansari at Primary & Urgent Care. He performs a physical exam and ask questions about your sexual and medical history.

They check for signs and symptoms of STDs, such as:

  • Thick or cloudy discharge from the penis or vagina
  • Bumps, blisters, or sores on the genitals
  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Genital or anal itching or irritation

It’s important to be honest with your doctor about your sexual history. Based on your sexual risk factors and any symptoms you may have, they recommend the right STD tests for you and your partner.

What does STD testing involve?

Depending on your particular needs, Dr. Ansari may perform a variety of STD tests. Most STD tests involve simple blood or urine samples. A blood or urine test can detect the following STDs.

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Hepatitis
  • Herpes
  • Syphilis
  • HIV

However, your provider may perform a vaginal, cervical, or urethral swab for faster and more accurate test results. If you’re a woman over age 30, you may also receive a routine HPV test every five years along with your Pap test and pelvic exam.

After the results of your STD tests come back, Dr. Ansari recommends any necessary treatment.
